Ovary Action

A few years ago, a group of women got together to create an environment for the comedic female voice. Ovary Action an all women’s standup comedy event, was born. Wilmington, North Carolina is considered an artistic area with its theatres, art galleries, and tourist attractions. It is also a college town. Much of the entertainment is geared toward college students, especially when it comes to comedy. Young white males tend to dominate the field of standup comedy. Women entering comedy are considered a minority. This is especially true for women over the age of thirty.

Ovary Action sets out to prove female entertainment stereotypes untrue. Originally, three women at different stages in life(one single with a school age child, one married with young kids, and one single with a grown child) came together to create a comedy show that celebrated the diversity in female comedy and as a result proved that women are "actually funny," to all audiences.

The events began at a small theatre based out of Wilmington, NC. The goal is to maintain a show that not only highlights female stand-up comedians, but also offers an opportunity for women and the community to come together after the show. Ovary offers an amazing opportunity amongst the performers to bond, meet, and support new stand-up comedians. Each woman has so much to offer, but most feel apprehensive about the standard male dominated open mic environment.

“There was no place for women like us to, comfortably, work out our material for a like minded audience…We eventually had enough interest and funny women looking for the same thing and we all found a home in Ovary Action” -Brooklin Green (Ovary Founder). “We wanted to bring in an audience that enjoyed female adult humor”-Carla Cherry (Ovary Co-founder). “It is open for women and men; we get a lot of couples, moms, and single, older, younger and we offer an open mic opportunity to any woman who would like to try stand-up. We support women and their ‘funny’ voices.”- Amy Kennedy (Ovary co-founder).

A typical Ovary Action show consists of both experienced and novice female stand-up comedians. There is always an opening slot of up to five minutes for any women who is new to stand-up or would like to try stand-up comedy for the first time. Ovary Action always provides a supportive environment through the comedians and audience. The show incorporates local business, community, and events. Some previous examples have been wine tastings, psychics, cheese and chocolate vendors. They also had organizational eventshttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif like voter registration and charities for women’s organizations. Each show includes a table free to fill by the public of information on organizations, businesses and opportunities for women. The show consistently runs forty-five minutes then breaks for ten to fifteen minutes. This allows time for the audience to mingle and talk. Then a guest artist, organization, or local business owner from the community comes to perform or speak briefly to the audience. We have local celebrities, musicians, and public service organizations. They are short events that would be willing to come and let our audience sample their talent, information, or product. Ovary continues by booking outside events privately and for charity. “Ovary became a place for women to find and enjoy their voice, not be forced to fit into anyone else’s”- Cindy Cheatum.
